The leader of Ontario’s official opposition is promising municipalities a “new deal” should she win the next provincial election, saying she would reverse downloading and listen to lower-level governments.
New Democratic Party Leader Marit Stiles toured on Friday parts of Hastings County and Belleville.
“Whether you live in Toronto, Kingston, Belleville or Tweed – you deserve a good life,” a news release quoted Stiles as saying.
If elected premier, she said, “I will reverse years of downloading costs and services and make a big difference in the lives of people in small town Ontario.”
Six Hastings County mayors and Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis, along with three members of Tweed council, met with Stiles to discuss municipal needs amid what they called a “crisis” of underfunding by the provincial and federal governments. Joining Stiles was her party’s rural affairs critic and house leader, John Vanthof, the MPP for Timiskaming-Cochrane.
